As I'm reflecting on the passage I preached on Sunday, I am really thankful for the Lord's mercy to so clearly remind us of our true identity in our current culture. 1 Peter 2:9-10 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. After reading Carl Trueman's book, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self this past week I felt existentially depressed. He catalogues how humanity has gone through three cultural stages to be where we are today: the psychological man in an overly therapeutic culture.
