Stop dating the church... and fall in love with the family of God

Stop dating the church... and fall in love with the family of God - the title of a little book by Joshua Harris . 1 Corinthians 1:1-3... To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ–their Lord and ours: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. -       'The church of God...' - The church is God's idea and his property. It is the vehicle he created to take his Gospel, his grace and peace into the world. -       The church is precious to God. He sanctified believers who form the church through his own death on the cross. This was done so that we can be freed and live holy lives. -       The church is both global and local. That means the small churches are still the 'church of God in ... London or Johannesburg or Toronto...' -      ...

It's a heart thing

Matthew 6:21 Jesus said: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. " -       What do you view as valuable and worth sacrificing your comfort, time and energy for? -       As you look at your life - what is your treasure? Do you realise that this is where your heart is rooted? -       Is that thing or person able to satisfy all the longings and desires of your heart eternally? Prayer : Lord Jesus Christ, your death on the cross tells us the unmistakable truth that your love for us is real. More than that - your resurrection from the dead is proof that your love for us is undying and eternal. As I look at your love for me - help me to let go of the small treasures I find my joy in, to find my joy eternally in you. Amen You are receiving these emails because you have visited or supported Canada Water Church or Surrey Docks Church, London. Feel free to respond to this address and ask any ques...

Don't underestimate the power of money

1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” -       Its seldom the love of more money in our bank accounts that we desire - it's rather that which the money can get us that we desire. -       It is this power of money that we need to be aware of. What can money get you that will bring real fulfilment, satisfaction or approval? (Try this - make a list). -        Loving Jesus Christ is the only antidote to this kind of love for the things money is supposed to get you. But how do I get to love Jesus more? -       Go to the cross - hear those cries on Calvary as the Son of God is crucified and dies for you on the cross. What's worth more? Money or the His undying love? Prayer : Lord Jesus Christ, help me to understand the immense cost you paid in order to get me. As I see your love for me - please push my desire for more money out of my heart as I tr...

Are you in the rat race?

Hebrews 13:5 "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. ' " -       Are you part of the rat race? The endless, self-defeating or pointless pursuit of something you will never have enough of? -       Here Paul writes that the love of money is directly opposed to the freedom and contentment that comes when we know who we are to God: He will never leave or forsake you. -        'The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat' - William Sloane Coffin Prayer : Lord Jesus Christ, we want to confess that having more money makes us feel better about ourselves - rather than looking to you. Help us to realise that we are more than mere 'rats' and we are loved by our heavenly Father at the cost of his own Son. Let us be content with that as we discover that we were created to love and enjo...

God is the Giver... you are a reciever

1 Corinthians 4:7 "For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?" -       In our society there is the constant pressure on us 'to make it'. -       We're not entirely sure what we have to make, or what it would look like if we've made it - but what we're sure of is that we can't just 'get it'. -       We tend to think that to 'get' or to receive makes us look weak or incapable. -       But strangely that is how we came into being - we received life. Not only that - we received our unique personalities, gifts and skills. And with that we continue to live - using those gifts and skills we received in the opportunities provided for us. -       We're less about 'making it' and all about 'getting it'. Prayer : Lord Jesus Christ, as we look at everything we have we ...

God gives us more than the ability to produce wealth...

Deuteronomy 8:17-18 "You may say to yourself, 'My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me. ' But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth...” -       We tend to think that our income or salary is a reflection of our own worth. -       So if we earn a lot of money - we feel good about who we are, and if we earn a small income we tend to feel small and insignificant. -       The God of the Gospel frees us from this lie. Your income is not a reflection on your worth - rather it is a reflection of God's grace to you. Through giving to us his Son He gave us far more than the ability to produce wealth - He became our Father that now eternally cares for us! Prayer : Lord Jesus Christ, you don't just give us gifts to produce an income - you gave us yourself to settle our debt eternally and welcome us into our Father's home. Please help us ...
