Daily Devotional - Thursday

    Theme: The Gospel Community

In Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus says the following to his disciples:  "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12
    • We don't need any convincing to acknowledge the darkness in this world.  What does surprise us is the unconventional way God chose to shine light into this darkness.
    • He does it by linking Himself to a community of disciples who' own hearts have been corrupted by the very darkness He came to dispel.
    • Then He continues to call them up to become a city of refuge for people in need, following His example as he healed and served those in need.
    • Finally, He calls them to do this out in the open - giving light to the communities they've been placed in to serve.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us the light of life by being put, not on a stand like a light but by being put on a cross like a thief and a sinner.  On that cross you allowed our darkness to flood your light so that we can have your light of life!  We plead with you now - please give us the heart to point others to you by shining your light in this dark world.  Amen
