Theme: The Gospel Community
Paul writes to Timothy in 1 Tim 3:14-16: I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of truth. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:
He was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.
He was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.
- There is a way to behave that is appropriate when you are part of God's household or family. But it is not as stingy and small minded as you might think it is.
- The family in those days were a very broad group of people and even slaves were included and treated as sons and daughters. The family was a place of ultimate belonging and identity, a place you could truly call 'home'.
- The church, here being called 'God's family' brought security and identity to believers which in turn shaped the way they interacted with each other and the people around them. This is the 'mystery of godliness' that the church had back then which we are hoping to rekindle in our church today.
- But look at how Paul says we will get this security and identity back of being God's family or household: He points us to Jesus Christ, God that became man to make us into his family.
