Yesterday we said that words and metaphors fall short of expressing what hell is like. Here how the last book of the Bible explains it:
Rev 20:10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
From this and other texts in the Bible we know at least one literal fact about hell - it is forever. This is a thought that drives us to tears as we think about our unbelieving friends and family. How can a loving God do this?
Perhaps the question should rather be - how can loving people do this? Yes, hell is awful and unending but it is also completely avoidable.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, on the cross you took our punishment of separation from the Father, but because you were absolutely sinless satan had no right to hold you there eternally. Thank you for making me a new creation in you - and giving me your privileges. Please do the same for those I love. Amen
