Mere Christianity - C.S. Lewis - Part 3 (I'm sorry, I lost my copy of Mere Christianity)

"We are faced, then, with a frightening alternative. This man we are talking about either was (and is) just what He said or else a lunatic, or something worse. Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God. God has landed on this enemy-occupied world in human form.

And now, what was the purpose of it all? What did He come to do? Well, to teach, of course; but as soon as you look into the New Testament or any other Christian writing you will find they are constantly talking about something different—about His death and His coming to life again. It is obvious that Christians think the chief point of the story lies here. They think the main thing He came to earth to do was to suffer and be killed." C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Yes, Jesus was a teacher but the Bible tells us who He was and what He came to do. Just listen to John 1:29:
"The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"

This lamb was not just someone who was expendable. Earlier in the same chapter John says this about this lamb in John 1:14:
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

Right at the beginning John tells is who this 'Word' is in John 1:1:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, you truly are God who took our sins on yourself. We realise it is our own sinfulness that stops us from repenting and believing in you - would you please help us to see that you've come to save us - and believe in you? Amen

PS: This week I was blogging through a program broadcasted on the BBC in 1942 by C.S. Lewis, later republished in a book called 'Mere Christianity'. I then proceeded to loose my copy of the book which lead to the interruption. I'm very sorry. This Sunday I will be preaching on '
