Christ's appearance in the Old Testament - the Angel of the Lord

Goodmorning,

The word Angel in both the Hebrew and Greek means messenger. In the Old Testament we see a special messenger called the Angel of the Lord. There is plenty of evidence that this was Christ before his incarnation:

“See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him." Ex 23:20

This Angel of the Lord was doing the things Christ eventually did in the New Testament - revealing God (Ex. 3), redeeming sinners (1 Kings 19:35), interceding for us (Zech. 12:1-13), protecting us (Ps. 34:7) and comforting people (Gen. 16:7-13). But this fearsome Angel of the Lord, like Jesus also judged (1 Chron. 21:1, 14-15).

Jesus is not the "limp-wrist hippie in a dress with a lot of product in His hair, who drank decaf and made pithy Zen statements about life while shopping for the perfect pair of shoes" (Mark Driscoll). Instead he is the "one to whom all authority in heaven and earth has been given" and we are to worship him as such (Matt 28:18).

Prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ, we worship you as the good King, not only with status but also with power to fulfil your plans. Help us not to underestimate you and please show us more of yourself. Amen.

Regards
Rev. Kruger de Kock
