As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:1-5
- We would all like to change - my job in preaching is not to tell you what needs to be done to change, but what Christ has done that enables you to change.
- Either giving you 3 steps to change or coercing you through guilt to change is not the Gospel way - it will change you to become a pharisee... rather than a disciple.
- Look at the above text and ask yourself - "What can a dead person/corpse do to be saved?". Nothing. If we were saved by Christ, why do we think we need to go on in our own strength rather than on his?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ, I confess that I sometimes think that there were something good in me that you saw, and that's the reason you saved me. I can't be further from the Gospel. I was your enemy, completely dead in my sin - and my salvation was completely done by you, inspite of me. Thank you for your grace and help me to keep trusting in you. Amen.
Regards
Rev. Kruger de Kock
ps. This week I want to help you to make the most of the sermons you hear on Sundays. What follows this week are are some of the things I think God called me to do when I preach (I knicked them from Felipe Assis - a fellow church planter in Redeemer City to City).
