Loving the church so much it hurts... There are different kinds of love in the Bible - eros, philos and agape... It is this last one that should scare us. “For God so loved (agape) the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16). - Agape is the the love-word for absolute, unself-centered, brutal sacrifice.
- Yes, Jesus loved his disciples as friends, but it was in his agape that scared them. After he told them that he would die for them Peter even took Jesus aside and warned him that this is a little OTT (Mark 8:31-35).
- This brutal, scary, sacrificial love didn't end on the cross. That is where it started.
- Jesus said: “This is my commandment, that you love (agape) one another as I have loved you. (John 15:12–13).
Prayer - Lord Jesus Christ, we must confess - this kind of love for each other in church sounds a little bit too much. Please forgive us for our coldness and hardness of heart and help us to love like you loved. Amen. Regards, Kruger City Life London |
