Contradictio in terminis

A Daily Devotional from Canada Water Church and Surrey Docks Church, London

Contradiction in terms
This figure of speech - where one term in a sentence contradicts the rest of the sentence - seems to be all over the Bible.

Bible

"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Mark 15:34

  • Why would Jesus use the word 'my' in front of God?  It speaks of intimacy and this while he is being forsaken by God?
  • And why would God forsake God (the Bible teaches that Jesus is God - the second person of the Trinity)?
  • It seems like a contradiction in terms.  But not if you realise that Jesus remained who He was from an eternity - fully God and 100% holy.
  • It is the punishment for our sin that came down on the holy Jesus Christ - and that is the reason that He could pay for our sin - He had no sin of his own.
  • His cry on the cross - far from being a contradiction - reaffirms that Jesus is God: intimate with God because He is himself God, but forsaken from God to pay for our sin.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, you deserved to be worshiped even before the cross, yet you took the punishment for our sin on yourself and as a result you were forsaken and rejected.  Now, because of the cross we want to worship you for all eternity.  Amen

Regards,
Kruger
