Although a Christian's salvation is purely a work of God it does feel to us that we have to be in control of 'believing in Jesus'. But how God saves us truly mystifies us: He saves believers against their our own will (for we will never willingly follow Him), but not in such a way that He violates our free will. Almost like saving a toddler from crawling into a busy motorway to get his toy without grabbing him...
Just listen to how God balances his power and our free will according to Maurice Roberts:
"God saves no man to his harm. And God saves none against his will. Grace makes the sinner willing. It is a secret exercise of omnipotence on the hidden man of the heart coaxing and alluring him to salvation and glory by Christ. It is always effectual but it is never brute strength."
Bible
John 1:12,13: "But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God."
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, if you haven't yet given me a saving faith in you - will you please do it once and for all? If you have already given me new life, help me to see that you did it all for me - and that you deserve all the credit. Amen.
