Questioning Evangelism

I will resume with the Heidelberg Catechism next week - let's look at ways to share the Gospel this week.

Bible
As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
18 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone. Mark 10:17,18
• It's difficult to not sound judgemental, intolerant or preachy when you have an opportunity to share the Gospel with friends or colleagues.
• Jesus' own strategy in sharing the Gospel was marked by the questions he asked. In fact, Jesus' normal way of answering a question was with a question.
• Today this strategy works well - especially in a postmodern world where everyone believes they are entitled to 'their truth'.
• Newman (Questioning Evangelism) has a good example of this using a question that can easily come up in the conversations: "Don't you think that all religions are true?"
• In a situation like this I would normally launch straight into my reason why they are not - but think of the potential if you were to ask: "Do you? Surely you think there are some religions out there that is just made up?" In the conversation you could follow up with questions like: "How do you know a religion is true... Why doesn't Christianity fit your idea of truth?"

Prayer
Our Lord Jesus Christ, we realise that religion is not something people tend to talk about, but we ask that when someone does that we would be winsome, gracious and kind in the way that we help them see the truth you've shown us. We know you are the answer to the deepest questions and longings of our heart - please help us to show others that are to them as well. Amen
