As you look at yourself at the beginning of the year you see things that you would like to change - perhaps live more healthily and exercise. As you look at our city you see many things that you would like to fix - poverty, injustice, public transport.... As you look at your place of work or study - again you see thing's that's wrong, that needs to fixed or changed. This desire to make things better, to rid yourself and the world of brokenness, hurt, disease and illnesses is part of your DNA. The Bible tells us that we were made in the image of God. God is the one that don't only have the desire to make things new, but in and through Christ he is doing it at the moment.
To realise that you will live in this world with a certain amount of dissatisfaction as you desire or long for a better world is not a bad thing at all. In fact C.S. Lewis says: "If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world."
So perhaps, as you see everything that is wrong with you, your city or your place of work, don't become discouraged. Rather realise that God, not you is the one building his eternal city of eternal peace, joy and satisfaction.
Bible
Revelation 21:5 He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!"
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, we know from the Bible that in order to undo the consequences of man's fall into sin you had to live without sin and die as God poured out his punishment on you for our sin. We thank and praise you that you laid the foundation of your eternal city, not on more self-discipline and laws but on your sacrificial love on the cross. Amen
Ps.
I think all of you would agree that Steve did a great job with these devotionals during my holiday. Steve, we are looking forward to how God will continue to use you in his kingdom and pray you and Hannah every blessing.
